Innovative Footbridge Wins Silver at China’s Prestigious Retail Real Estate Event

On April 29, 2015, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) is pleased to present the 2015 China Shopping Center Awards’ prestigious Silver Award to SM Skywalk, the innovative footbridge that links the SM City Xiamen with the SM Lifestyle Center.

SM Skywalk is the award-winning 70 meter long, 5 meter high footbridge that connects the two malls above an arterial road. The enclosed walkway provides users a safe passage while offering a climate controlled and well-lit environment in which to travel. Since its launch in September 2013, both SM centers have experienced substantial sales and traffic increases—with one center retailer achieving a sales increase greater than 1000%. 

The annual China Shopping Center Awards program highlights excellence, innovation, and creativity within China’s retail real estate industry. Twelve exemplary retail properties, initiatives, and stores were honored for outstanding achievement across four categories: Marketing; Emerging Technology; New Retail Concepts; and Design and Development.

The Design and Development category recognized dynamic properties that underwent noteworthy renovation or expansion or that applied conceptual design in a new project.

Professional recognition for this award was given to the owner Xiamen SM City Co. Ltd., and parent company SM Prime Holdings.

ICSC presented the awards at the Inaugural Awards Presentation during the 2015 China Retail Summit & Connections event in Shanghai, China.

Winners of the ICSC China Awards receive automatic entry in the ICSC VIVA Awards, the global program that recognizes the shopping center industry’s most cutting-edge properties, innovative solutions and creative responses to market trends. The ICSC VIVA Awards are presented during RECon, the global retail real estate convention, held in Las Vegas.

Founded in 1957, ICSC is the premier global trade association of the shopping center industry. Its more than 68,000 members in over 100 countries include shopping center owners, developers, managers, marketing specialists, investors, retailers and brokers, as well as academics and public officials.
